PhD Projects
I am currently advertising several PhD positions at Imperial (starting September 2025):
Learning fast and generalizable climate models with neural differential equations [Info Sheet]
Learnable optimisation algorithms for inverse problems [Info Sheet]
Multi-scale simulation with physics-informed neural networks [Info Sheet]
I am also open to supervising PhD projects on other scientific machine learning topics, including opportunities for industry collaboration or partnering with other research groups. If you’re interested, please send me a research proposal outlining your proposed PhD topic.
Funding and deadlines
The PhD positions above are not funded through research grants and are eligible for College and/or Departmental scholarship funding: see here for more details.
Most scholarship application deadlines are early January: see here for exact dates.
Apply
To apply, please start by emailing me, attaching the following:
- CV (including education, and any research experience).
- Brief motivation letter (200 – 400 words) where you should highlight how your experience enables you to pursue the project (can be in the email body).
- Research proposal (only if you are not applying for a pre-defined project – 1 page). Effective research proposals are focused and concise; they should demonstrate a solid understanding of a (SciML) field, identify a specific, impactful problem or research question, and outline a feasible methodology. I encourage you to review our lab’s research to understand how your work might align with our focus. See here for more tips.
- Any additional materials that support your application (optional).
I reserve the right to disregard applications that do not adhere to these instructions, or appear overly generic. Please note it may take me up to 2 weeks to review your application.
After you apply
Applications that pass an initial screening will be followed by a 1:1 interview, where we will discuss your research interests and background. I may also ask you to complete a SciML-related coding task (which does not need preparation beforehand).
Should there be mutual interest following the initial interview, you will be encouraged to formally apply. At this stage, you will need to provide a research proposal and two academic referees. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a departmental/scholarship interview, which will include at least one additional faculty member. For more details on the formal PhD application process at Imperial see here.
Master’s Projects
I am open to supervising both home and visiting Master’s students provided our interests align. Please start by sending me your CV along with a short description of your relevant experience and research interests.
